When The Waterworks began in 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected president, ABBA topped the radio charts, and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was transforming the state. The oil boom in the Cook Inlet prompted many adventurous souls north for work—including our founder, Tim Bennett.
Armed with a photography degree and commercial hard-hat diver training, Tim was hired to prime Cook Inlet’s offshore oil platforms for operation. He and his wife, Linda Bennett, made their home in the mountain community of Girdwood.
Working in zero-visibility, ice-cold waters, Tim began engineering custom underwater camera systems. To test his underwater optics and camera housings at home, he built Girdwood’s very first Redwood Hot Tub.
It didn't take long for fellow Girdwoodians and friends to discover the steaming redwood tub in the snow. Soon, neighbors were asking for tubs of their own. Tim and The Waterworks crew began handcrafting custom Redwood Hot Tubs well into the mid-1980s, learning firsthand what extreme Alaskan temperatures demand of plumbing, insulation, and timber.
When portable hot tubs emerged, Tim and Linda set out to find a manufacturer whose engineering could survive the true Alaskan climate. After rigorous vetting, they partnered with Watkins Wellness and Hot Spring® Spas—establishing a relationship that has lasted for more than 35 years.

Carrying the tradition forward: Kali Bennett
Today, the legacy continues under the leadership of Tim and Linda’s daughter, Kali Bennett, who grew up immersed in the family business and now owns and operates The Waterworks.
Over the past five decades, more than 9,500 Alaskan families have trusted The Waterworks for their hot tubs, saunas, and swim spas. Many of our early clients remain part of our extended family today, now purchasing their second or third spa from us.
