Hot Tub Winterization

Protect your spa from sub-zero Alaska temperatures. Follow our step-by-step winterization instructions or hire our factory-trained technicians.

Freeze Prevention

Why winterizing is critical in Alaska.

In Alaska, winter temperatures regularly drop below zero. If you plan to turn off your hot tub, leave it empty, or go out of town for the winter, you must winterize it. If any water remains in the pumps, heater, or plumbing lines, it will freeze, expand, and rupture the pipes, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Caution: Never Leave a Spa Unpowered and Un-Winterized!

Even a short 24-hour power outage in -10°F can freeze a hot tub if it is not running or properly winterized. Standard draining via the drain valve is NOT sufficient because water remains trapped inside the jets, manifold, and pump impellers.

The Process

Step-by-Step Winterization Guide

Step 1

Cut the Power

Turn off the main GFCI breaker or disconnect power to the spa. Verify that the control panel goes dark. Never work on a spa with active electrical power.

Step 2

Drain the Water

Attach a hose to the drain valve or use a submersible pump to quickly empty the spa. Sponge out any remaining water from the footwell and filter canister.

Step 3

Blow Out the Lines

Use a heavy-duty wet/dry vacuum or air blower. Place the blower hose into the filter pipe and blow out the jets. Go around to each jet and clear any trapped water.

Step 4

Drain Pump & Heater Plugs

Access the equipment compartment. Unscrew the drain plugs on the front of the circulation pump and main jet pumps. Disconnect the heater union collars to drain any water in the heating tube.

Step 5

Add Non-Toxic Antifreeze

Pour 1 to 2 gallons of non-toxic RV/Marine antifreeze (propylene glycol) down the filter standpipe and into individual jets. NEVER use automotive ethylene glycol, which is toxic to humans and damages spa seals.

Step 6

Secure the Cover

Close the cover and lock down all security straps. Place a heavy tarp or plywood sheet over the cover to protect it from heavy snow loads, and strap it down securely against winter winds.
