Essential cleaning procedures, filter care routines, water replacement guidelines, and cold-weather safeguards from The Waterworks.
Keeping Your Spa Shell & Components Clean
Surface & Shell Cleaning
Soak in sparkling clean water by following these manufacturer-approved cleaning practices to protect your acrylic shell and headrests:
- Entire Shell: Use a mild, non-abrasive, non-sudsing cleaner and a soft rag or nylon scrubber to remove waterline dirt and bath residues.
- Minor Surface Spots: Common baking soda applied with a damp cloth works effectively on small surface deposits without scratching the acrylic.
- Protective Shine: Apply FreshWater® Spa Shine to a clean, completely dry spa shell before refilling to seal and protect against future residue adhesion.
- Spa Pillows: Refer to your model's manual to detach pillows for gentle cleaning. Remove them when shocking the spa to extend vinyl life.
Cover Conditioning & Care
Your spa cover endures harsh Alaska weather. Proper care preserves the vinyl exterior and tight hinge seal:
- Rinse & Wash: Remove the cover and spray with a garden hose. Wash using a mild soap solution (1 tsp dishwashing liquid to 2 gallons water) or baking soda in circular motions.
- Clean Underside: Rinse bottom surfaces with fresh water without soap and wipe dry.
- Conditioning: Apply a thin film of Hot Spring Cover Shield™ to the top vinyl surface to condition against UV breakdown and cracking.
Cartridge Cleaning & Water Changes
Monthly Filter Cartridge Care
Mineral particles and organic residues clog pleats over time. Perform this routine monthly:
- 1. Hose Rinse: Remove cartridges and spray with a garden hose, rotating while spraying directly between pleats to dislodge trapped debris.
- 2. Degrease: Spray with FreshWater® Instant Filter Cleaner, let soak for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. For deep cleaning, use FreshWater® Filter Cleaner overnight soak.
- 3. Replacement Cadence: Standard paper cartridges should be replaced every 2–3 years with genuine Watkins replacement filters. Tri-X® ceramic filters can last up to 5 years when properly maintained.
Drain, Clean & Refill with Pre-Filter
Soaps, body oils, and total dissolved solids accumulate over time. Refresh your water cleanly:
- Drain Schedule: Traditional water care systems require draining every 3–4 months. FreshWater® Salt Systems typically extend refill intervals up to 12 months with proper cartridge care.
- CleanScreen™ Pre-Filter: When refilling, always screw a CleanScreen™ Pre-Filter onto your garden hose. It removes suspended solids, tannins, and dissolved metals (iron and copper) before water touches your shell.
- Fill via Standpipe: Always insert the hose into the primary filter standpipe during refill to purge air from heater and pump plumbing lines.
Cold-Weather Operation & Vacation Prep
Winter Operation in Alaska
Hot Spring and Caldera spas are fully insulated and engineered for year-round sub-zero operation. Follow these guidelines during cold winter months:
Equipment Bay Winter Blanket
Install a vinyl-covered, fiberglass-insulated Watkins Winter Blanket inside your equipment door for added freeze precaution around pumps and plumbing.
Snow & Ice Removal Rule
Brush fresh snow off your cover with a soft broom. If ice forms around the rim, splash lukewarm water to melt it—never pry or chip ice with a shovel.
Cover Seal Inspection
Check that your cover lies completely flat and latch all child locks. If heat escapes around the perimeter, check for hinge tear or waterlogging.
Vacation Checklist
Before leaving home: adjust pH to 7.2–7.6, super-chlorinate or add FreshWater MPS Chlorine-Free Oxidizer, lock down cover, and verify power status.
